APT SKIDATA LIGHTING TRIAL PROVES 60% REDUCTION IN ENERGY CONSUMPTION

Research from APT Skidata shows that the effective use of LED lighting in a multi-storey car park can save 60% of the site's annual lighting bill.

APT Skidata has been working in partnership with Town Centre Car Parks (TCCP) to explore the green efficiencies that can be achieved with the use of new technologies in the parking environment. A trial has been running since August at the Merrion Centre multi-storey in Leeds city centre. Central to the trial is Circontrol's intelligent LED lighting solution and its bay sensing technology supplied by APT Skidata.

The objective of the trial was to illustrate the potential savings made when running LED lights instead of the more conventional florescent tubes within a multi-storey car park, as Sean Dunstan explains: “A trial area of 10 spaces was established and nine fluorescent lights covering these bays were replaced with LED modules, linked to our control unit. Additionally, a set of nine fluorescent lamps on the other side of the car park was selected and the power supply to these lights was also fed through the control cabinet for energy consumption management.”

The technology is underpinned by Circontrol's SCADA management software, which controls the system functionality, taking into account, for example, natural light and car park usage and dims the lights when necessary. It also provides real time monitoring of the system's status and the software is able to monitor electricity consumption, voltage, energy, and harmonics.

The 24-hour Merrion Centre car park, with eight levels and 1,050 spaces, would typically use 223230Kwh, and based on the tariff structure in the previous year this equates to annual running costs in the region of £22,000. Data from the trial shows that if LED lighting was in place across all the parking bays within the car park this cost would be reduced to less than £8,600. “A significant saving,” says Sean. “The results have shown an impressive reduction in consumption – it is more than we were expecting and we are very pleased to demonstrate the significant potential this will have on the parking industry in the future.”

Bay sensing has also been installed at the bays in the test area and if this technology, which is primarily used to help drivers locate empty spaces efficiently, was integrated with the LED lighting further energy savings would have been made. The bay monitoring technology can be configured to automatically control LED light output on conditions of occupancy, explains Sean: “So for example, the default LED light level can be set at 50% and should a vehicle park in the space the lighting will increase to 100% for a set period long enough for the occupants to unload the vehicle and leave the level, following which the lighting would resume its default efficient state until another vehicle parks or motion sensors detect a returning vehicle.”

The trial came about because TCCP wanted to explore the commercial benefits of introducing new renewable technologies, explains Ben Ziff, Managing Director of TCCP: “It is important for us to determine the positive impact that new technologies can have within the parking environment, on the green agenda and on the customer experience, before rolling out a refurbishment project across the whole of the facility. We wanted to be sure that it would create a car park for the 21st century and be in keeping with the needs of everyone connected with the Merrion Centre. The results from the trial are very enlightening and go a long way to prove the worth of LED lighting.”

Also on trial at the site is Evolt electrical vehicle charging technology from APT Technologies. An Evolt Multipoint solution has been installed with charging points at two bays. Evolt Multipoint is a scalable charging solution that can have up to 32 outlets remotely controlled by a master unit providing set parameters for preventative maintenance with early fault detection, and intelligent reporting.
