APT SECURITY SYSTEMS PREVENTS NEW COUNCIL BUS LANE FROM MIS-USE

APT Security Systems, the UK's leading provider of traffic management technology, has designed and installed a new system comprising four bi-folding gates to prevent unauthorised vehicles using a new dedicated bus lane in Swansea.

The Express Way, a £2.8m two-way dedicated bus lane, is part of a major city centre road improvement scheme aimed at making public transport links more reliable and efficient. There are about 100 bus movements per hour in and out of the city centre, with no fewer than 300,000 cars taking advantage of the three park and ride sites in 2007 alone. The route bypasses much of Neath Road and the busy Dyfatty junction, significantly reducing travel time to and from the city centre and helping to reduce congestion along Neath Road.

Swansea City Council approached APT for a way of controlling unauthorised use of the Express Way as John Hague, Cabinet Member for the Environment explains: "We are continuing our efforts to make public transport the popular choice of transport for people visiting the city centre, and that means keeping the new Express Way free from abuse. Park and ride in Swansea has an excellent reputation in terms of public transport. Those already using it will benefit greatly from the quicker journey times.

“The installation of these gates illustrates our commitment to providing effective infrastructure that gives public transport priority and reduces journey times for those using it,” he adds.

Chris Rowlands, General Manager of APT Security Systems says: “It is imperative for a new traffic improvement scheme to be kept for its intended purpose – in this case giving buses a clear route through Swansea City Centre. The bi-folding gates are an ideal solution in this case and we are pleased they are working so well.”
